4.0 out of 5 stars Great Case! Screen cover traps air bubbles, but i've found the fix..., March 9, 2010

This is a great case. This is the second one i have ordered (just like the yellow accent). Very rugged. You can rest easy handling your investment as long as it's in this thing. I have dropped mine onto asphalt too many times to count, and no problems with the phone at all. I must admit, when I first got the iphone into the case, I noticed that the screen protector adheres to the face of the iphone giving it an oily appearance. This is the most common complaint about this particular case, but I have found the fix for this. Baby powder. I know this sounds crazy, but it works flawlessly. There is a really good video on youtube on how to apply it. This completely fixes the problem. Because of this little fix, I now give this product 5 stars. Contrary to some reportings, this case IS NOT waterproof. However, It does a darn good job protecting it from splashes, light rain, dust, etc. If you are looking for extreme protection, look no further.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Defense for the Greatest Phone, January 20, 2010

If you own or are planning to buy an iPhone, then you MUST have some sort of protection for your long term investment in this handheld device.

The otterbox does not advertise waterproofing the phone, but it does a pretty good job. The primary effect of the otterbox defender is to protect it from short falls to the ground. The FIRST day I had my otterbox on my phone, i slipped, and the phone when flying across the pavement and into the street. After picking it up, (along wiht my ego) i found that the skin wasnt even scratched or marked up, and the phone acted like nothing had happened (much like I did...).
Also, my dogs were fighting in my living room one day and knocked over a glass of water onto my poor Iphone in this skin... To my surprise, after shaking off the water and removing the skin, the phone itself was completely dry and unharmed... I let case and skin dry and re-installed it immediately.

This product contains two basic elements (though its advertised as three, its not...)

1: Hardcover plastic shell container
2: Silicone sealing skin.

The hardcover yellow plastic shell snaps onto the phone and requires a tool of sopme sort (or good fingernails and strong hands) to remove.
The black silicone cover is very surable, but attracts lint often and ends up being a grayinsh color if you keep the phone in your pockets (which is why i got the case to begin wiht, so spare change and keys wont kill my phone.
The hardcover has two intersting elements that are noteworthy.
First: Its solution for sticky and annoying screen protectors is an off-the-surface firm, plastic film that is on the otterbox hardcover... This film allows finger tip hat to pass thru it fery effectively and keeps most lint and dust out of the phone.
Second: It has a carrying attatchment that snaps onto the phone (or that the phone snaps into, depending on your perspective). It can accept the phone from either facing (screen out or in) but it only really secures itself in with a snap if the screen is facing inward (towards the belt-clip) as you can imagine, it has a rotating belt clip with a safety hook on the inside of the clip-part so it wont slip off whatever strap or belt you hook it on.

At the end of the day, this cover/case/skin is the best, first, and last line fo defense for your iPhone, and if you plan on getting a phone, have this baby ready to go on it BEFORE you leave the dealer with phone in tow.

If i could rate this any higher, i would, but 5/5 stars will do... I honestly rate it 7/5 stars... its just that good. (Also, you should note, this retails for nearly $50 - $65 USD depending on where you go.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Otterbox Defender;, April 4, 2010

Not sure what the"hurt,sore" finger is about but Ill address the product I am using which is the Otterbox Defender;

Its durable and pretty much water resistant. I have dropped it in mud puddles accidently and picked it up and nothing got in. Its bigger thank most but has to be. This isnt a case to put in shirt pocket etc...but i really dont think that this is what it is made for. This is for those who have a job where you want to protect your phone from all sorts of elements. Or if you have little kids who play games on it to keep it safe from drops, smudges etc.
I have never nor any of my many co-workers who have this have ever had problems with running the there finger over the screen and when hitiing the edge have sore fingers, thats a first. You think the holster is defective but then when you actually put it on CORRECTLY its as snug as you know what. It isnt supposed to face out, it faces in and the little indentions fit perfectly. It does its job. Its not slim line like few people think it is. Its bigger than most. Hope this helps....

5.0 out of 5 stars Great protection, poor for docks, January 12, 2011

This review is from: Otterbox Defender Case for iPod touch 4th Generation (Black Plastic / Black Silicone) (Electronics)
Just got this case to replace the Belkin Grip Graphix (a nice silicone case), which I liked but doesn't do much of anything for protection.

I loved the Otterbox I got for my wife's Blackberry, which would have been toast by now without its protection, so I decided to give this a try to protect my new iPod. Purchased directly from Otterbox (used 10% off coupon). Extremely fast delivery (2 days).

The Good:
- AWESOME protection. This thing is made to take a beating more than any other case I've seen
- Nice screen cover. Anti-glare, but doesn't have too much sparkling/diffraction effect. Also easy to wipe down. Can't comment on durability yet, but seems good so far. No problems at all using the interface through the screen.
- Buttons are still easy to use (volume requires some force to press, but nothing bad)
- Very good grip - much easier to hold than the plain iPod without a case (though the Belkin I had was also very good in this regard, as are most silicone cases)
- Looks nice, very clean appearance
- The silicone outside fits nice and tightly over the hard inner shell

The Bad:
- Pretty bulky - turns your nifty thin iPod touch into the size of an iPod classic. Still, not too bad for the level of protection it provides
- Raised edges around the screen make it harder to use the interface, especially for some games and trying to type when in vertical/portrait orientation. I even fail to unlock it with the slide gesture fairly often (but then again, I have large fingers)
- Some uncovered parts, including the Apple logo on the back. This is good and bad - probably good for camera quality, but when you take that case off after a while, I imagine you are going to have a nice scratched up circle around the Apple logo =P

The Ugly:
- It pretty much will make your iPod unusable in any dock. I finally got an iPod to use with my Onkyo dock, and now I can't dock it. But, I knew this by the other reviews before I bought it!
- The flaps covering the dock connector and earphone jack are floppy, as mentioned by other reviews. This really is just ugly. In particular, the one for the earphone jack doesn't seat properly into the jack, and pops out a bit which looks goofy and catches my finger when holding it.

Overall, I like the case, but am bummed about the docking issue, and don't care for the floppy covers over the ports. I would give it 4 - 4.5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great case with a few annoyances, January 4, 2011

This review is from: Otterbox Defender Case for iPod touch 4th Generation (Black Plastic / Black Silicone) (Electronics)
I had a 2G/3G Defender case on my previous iPod Touch 3G, which is now my wife's since she got me the 4G for xmas. The new 4G case feels pleasantly thinner than the previous model (which felt a bit too chunky), but I hope it has the same level of protection. I've dropped my previous iPod accidentally from counter height onto tile floor and it's been fine in the 2G/3G Defender case, and the new thinness of this case makes me wonder if it would protect as well (not intending to try).

As others have mentioned, the sync port and headphone dock flaps on the bottom are more difficult to get to stay in, and flop out easier, which is frustrating enough to almost give this 4 stars instead of 5, but that would be unfair to other people looking to compare this great case to other lesser cases. The 2G/3G version of this case completely covered the iPod and stayed covered unless you deliberately opened the port flaps. This case has 4 unprotected holes: for both cameras (front and back), for light sensor, and for the speaker (next to the ports). Not sure how I feel about that. Will probably let more dust/dirt in, and the new hard plastic case is much harder to take off than the previous one for cleaning.

On the plus side, the new protective screen exhibits no oilslicking like the old one did (see talcum powder workarounds for that on the old one), but the new one has already picked up a few light fingernail marks from my relatives playing angry birds on it.

The pad for the power button does make it easier to press, but the volume pads require substantially more force.

I've had it now for a bit under a week, and it's still a wonderful case, like the previous gen version, with the above caveats. 4 stars comparatively, 5 stars compared to other cases.

UPDATE: After using it daily for a couple months now, I've dropped this from 5 to 4 stars, as the silicone wrapper keeps slipping, and buckling up a bit on the hard inner case. This combined with the flaps issue, regular dirt accumulation through the holes, and a bit of tactile (not audible) creaking of the plastic case, compel me to 4 star this instead of 5. Don't get me wrong, if I lost it, I'd replace it with another one, and it still protects very well against drops and bumps, but it seems a few needless things were shortcut when designing this.

All of the good things people have said about this case are true. It is simple to install and will protect your iPod Touch from just about anything that might happen during regular use. I, unfortunately, have returned mine because I cannot use the dock on my new TV Panasonic TC-L22X2 22-Inch 720p LCD HDTV with iPod Dock. At first I thought is was because of the floppy port covers (Yes, they don't stay in very well.) on the bottom, but I later noticed that the hard inner case adds about 1/4-1/2 inch on the bottom of the Touch so the dock cannot be fully inserted. It does work great with the dock that comes with the Touch (the one that attached to your computer via USB) but you might be disappointed if you expect to use a stand-up dock.
